The Chart Design tab becomes available when a chart is selected in the document. It provides tools to manage chart data, modify chart elements, apply chart styles, change chart types, resize charts, configure text wrapping, and access advanced chart settings.
Follow the steps below to access the Chart Design tab.
- Select a chart within the document.
- The Chart Design tab appears on the ribbon.
- Use the available options to customize the selected chart.
- Use Chart Elements to display titles, legends, and labels that improve chart readability.
- Use Edit Data to keep chart information accurate and up to date.
- Enable Lock Aspect Ratio when resizing charts to prevent distortion.
Chart Elements
The Chart Elements option allows users to display, hide, and customize chart components such as axes, axis titles, chart titles, data labels, error bars, gridlines, legends, and trendlines.
Steps to Manage Chart Elements:
- Select the chart.
- Click the Chart Design tab.
- Select Chart Elements.

Choose the desired chart element and configure its settings. The selected chart element settings are applied to the chart.
ℹ️ NotesAvailable chart elements may vary depending on the selected chart type. Some chart types may not support all chart element options.
Edit Data
The Edit Data option opens the Chart Editor window, allowing users to modify the data displayed in the chart.
Steps to Edit Chart Data:
- Select the chart.
- Click the Chart Design tab.
- Select Edit Data. The Chart Editor window opens.
- Alternatively, double-click the chart to open the Chart Editor window directly.

Increase Decimal Increase displayed decimal places. Decrease Decimal Reduce displayed decimal places. Number Format Change how numeric values are displayed. Select Data Manage chart data ranges, series, and labels. ℹ️ NotesAny changes made in the Chart Editor are automatically reflected in the chart preview.
Select Data
The Select Data option allows users to manage the data source used by the chart.

| Horizontal (Category) Axis Labels | Modify category labels displayed on the chart. |

Change Chart Style
The Chart Style gallery allows users to quickly apply predefined visual styles to a chart.
Steps to Apply a Chart Style:
- Select the chart.
- Click the Chart Design tab.
- Select a style from the Chart Style gallery. The selected style is applied to the chart.
Change Chart Type
The Chart Type option allows users to switch the chart to a different chart category without recreating it.
Steps to Change a Chart Type:
- Select the chart.
- Click the Chart Design tab.
- Select Chart Type.

Choose the desired chart category and style. The chart is updated using the selected chart type.

Text Wrapping
The Wrapping option controls how document text interacts with the selected chart.
Steps to Apply Text Wrapping:
- Select the chart.
- Click the Chart Design tab.
- Select Wrapping.
- Choose the desired wrapping style. The selected wrapping style is applied to the chart.
Available Wrapping Styles

Description |
| In Line with Text | Places the chart within the text flow. |
| Square | Wraps text around the chart boundary. |
| Tight | Wraps text closely around the chart. |
| Through | Allows text to flow through transparent areas. |
| Top and Bottom | Places text above and below the chart. |
| In Front of Text | Displays the chart in front of the document text. |
| Behind Text | Displays the chart behind the document text. |
Resize a Chart
The Width and Height fields allow users to adjust chart dimensions.
Steps to Resize a Chart:
- Select the chart.
- Enter the desired values in the Width and Height fields.
- Optionally enable Lock Aspect Ratio to maintain chart proportions. The chart size is updated.
3D Rotation
The 3D Rotation option allows users to adjust the viewing angle of supported 3D charts.
Steps to Rotate a 3D Chart:
- Select a supported 3D chart.
- Click the Chart Design tab.
- Select 3D Rotation.
- Configure the desired rotation settings.
- Click OK to apply the changes.

| Perspective | Adjusts the viewing perspective of the 3D chart. |

| Autoscale | Automatically scales the chart based on the selected rotation settings. |
| Depth (% of Base) | Adjusts the depth of the 3D chart relative to its base size. |
| Height (% of Base) | Adjusts the chart height relative to its base size. |
| Default Rotation | Restores the default 3D rotation settings. |
Advanced Settings
The Advanced Settings option provides additional chart configuration and positioning options.
Chart Settings
The Chart Settings panel allows users to customize the appearance of the selected chart.
- Fill - Apply a color, gradient, pattern, or other fill style to the chart.
- Gradient Fill - Configure gradient styles, directions, colors, and opacity levels.
- Line - Modify the chart border size, color, and line style.

Opacity - Adjust the transparency of chart fill and line elements.
