Topics and Sub-Topics provide a structured way to organize courses and learning paths within the learning library. This hierarchy improves content discoverability and helps learners navigate training materials more efficiently.
This feature is available only for Premium accounts and must be enabled at the account level before use.

Enable Topics and Sub-Topics
The Topics/Sub-Topics feature must be enabled in account settings.
To enable the feature:
- Click the Profile icon and select Account Settings.
- Navigate to Litmos Features.
- Locate Topics / Sub Topics.
- Select Enable Topics / SubTopics.
- Click Save.
Once enabled, the Topics/Sub-Topics configuration options become available.
Best Practices
Follow these guidelines to maintain a clean and effective topic structure:
- Plan the topic hierarchy before creating topics.
- Use sub-topics only when they add clarity or value.
- Avoid deep or overly complex nesting.
- Topics can exist without sub-topics.
- Ensure courses are created before assigning them to topics.
- When assigning a sub-topic, consider whether the parent topic should also be assigned.
Create Topics and Sub-Topics
Topics and sub-topics are managed from the Litmos Features section.
To create a topic:
- Go to Account Settings → Litmos Features → Topics/Sub Topics.

Click Add Topic.
- Enter a topic name.
- Click Save.
To create a sub-topic:
- Select an existing topic or sub-topic.

Click Add Sub Topic.
- Enter the sub-topic name.
- Click Save.
Notes:
- Topics and sub-topics are listed alphabetically.
- Only Administrators and Account Owners can create or manage topics.
Assign Topics and Sub-Topics to Courses or Learning Paths
After creating topics, you can associate them with courses or learning paths.
To assign topics:
- Open the course or learning path.

Select Settings.
- Navigate to Topics/Sub Topics.

Click Add Topics.
- Use the + / – icons to expand or collapse the list.
- Select the required topic or sub-topic.
- Click Add.
To remove a topic, click the × icon next to the assigned topic.
Additional Notes:
- Assigning a sub-topic does not automatically assign its parent topic.
- Content appears under a topic only if explicitly assigned.
- Learners can view only the topics associated with the content they have access to.
