The Header & Footer tab becomes available when a header or footer is being edited. It provides options to customize header and footer content, insert page numbers, dates, fields, and images, and configure page-specific header and footer settings.
The user can perform the following actions in the tab:
- Access the Header & Footer Tab
- Page Number
- Date & Time
- Field
- Insert an Image
- Header and Footer Position
- Different Odd and Even Pages
- Different First Page
- Different First Page
- Link to Previous
- Close Header and Footer
Access the Header & Footer Tab
Follow the steps below to access the Header & Footer tab.
Option 1: Using the Insert Tab
- Click the Insert tab.
- Select Header & Footer.
- Choose Edit Header or Edit Footer.
Option 2: Using the Document Page
- Double-click within the header area at the top of the page, or the footer area at the bottom of the page.

The Header & Footer tab appears on the ribbon, allowing you to customize and manage header and footer content.
ℹ️ NotesSimilar header and footer options are also available from the Insert menu. Refer to the Header and Footer article for additional information and instructions.
Page Number
The Page Number option allows users to insert page numbers into the header or footer.
Steps to Insert Page Numbers:
- Place the cursor within the header or footer.
- Click the Header & Footer tab.
- Select Page Number.
- Choose the desired page number position.

- Top Center
- Top Right
- Bottom Left
- Bottom Center
- Bottom Right
- To Current Position
- Number of Pages
- Page Numbering
- The selected page numbering option is applied to the document.
Configure Page Numbering
The Page Numbering option allows users to control how page numbers are displayed throughout the document.
Steps to Configure Page Numbering:
- Place the cursor within the header or footer.
- Click the Header & Footer tab.
- Select Page Number.
- Click Page Numbering.
- Configure the desired settings.
- Click OK.
Available Options
| Option | Description |
|---|---|
| Continue from the previous section | Continues page numbering from the preceding section. |
| Start At | Starts page numbering from a specified number. |
| Number Format | Selects the format used for page numbers. |
Date & Time
The Date & Time option allows users to insert the current date and time into the header or footer.
Steps to Insert Date and Time:
- Place the cursor within the header or footer.
- Click the Header & Footer tab.
- Select Date & Time.
- Choose the desired language and date format.
- Optionally select Update Automatically.
- Click OK. The selected date and time format is inserted.
Field
The Field option allows users to insert dynamic fields that display document information.
Steps to Insert a Field:
- Place the cursor within the header or footer.
- Click the Header & Footer tab.
- Select Field.
- Enter the desired field code.

Click OK. The selected field is inserted into the header or footer.
ℹ️ NotesField values are updated automatically when the associated document information changes.
Insert an Image
The Image option allows users to insert an image into the header or footer.
Steps to Insert an Image:
- Place the cursor within the header or footer.
- Click the Header & Footer tab.
- Select Image.

Choose one of the following options:
- Image from File
- Image from URL
- Select the image and insert it into the document. The image is added to the selected header or footer.
Header and Footer Position
The Header from Top and Footer from Bottom options allow users to control the distance between the header or footer and the page margins.
Steps to Adjust Header or Footer Position:
- Click inside the header or footer area.
- Modify the Header from Top or Footer from Bottom value.
- Press Enter or click outside the field. The updated position is applied.
Different Odd and Even Pages
The Different Odd and Even Pages option allows users to use separate headers and footers for odd-numbered and even-numbered pages.
Steps to Use Different Odd and Even Pages:
- Click inside the header or footer area.
- Select Different Odd and Even Pages.
- Configure the header and footer content for each page type.
- The document uses separate headers and footers for odd and even pages.
Different First Page
The Different First Page option allows users to create a unique header or footer for the first page of the document.
Steps to Use a Different First Page:
- Click inside the header or footer area.
- Select a Different First Page.
- Configure the first-page header or footer separately from the remaining pages.
- The first page uses its own header and footer configuration.
Link to Previous
The Link to Previous option connects the current section's header or footer to the previous section.
Steps to Link Headers or Footers:
- Click inside the header or footer of a section.
- Select Link to Previous.
- Edit the content as needed.

Changes made to linked sections are reflected across connected headers or footers.
ℹ️ NotesThis option is available only when the document contains multiple sections.
Close Header and Footer
The Close option exits header and footer editing mode and returns to the main document.
Steps to Close Header and Footer Editing:
- Click the Header & Footer tab.
- Select Close. The document returns to standard editing mode.
- The Header & Footer tab is available only while editing a header or footer.
- Different page settings allow separate header and footer content for specific pages within the document.
- Use Different First Page when creating cover pages that should not display standard headers or footers.
- Use Page Numbering to maintain consistent page references throughout the document.
- Use images such as company logos to create consistent document branding.
